The Australian studio behind retro-styled titles like Danger Mouse, Lady Death: Demonicron, and The Phantom confirmed the two-player co-op brawler is bound for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, and PC. According to the official game description, players will get to “bag all the historical figures from the movie” and “challenge them to mini-games to earn their respect and participation in your on-stage history report.”
Securing both Reeves and Winter to voice Bill and Ted brings a serious dose of late-80s magic to the table. Art of Play also took a firm stance on their production pipeline, stating: “This game is created by real people with a real love for their craft. We are a strictly no generative AI studio across all our titles. This also extends to our trailer and supporting marketing materials.”
The details
Crowdfunding for the title is set to launch on Backerkit in early 2027 to help finance the final stretch of development through exclusive merch and physical editions. Art of Play noted that physical releases will include a special box styled after classic SNES packaging alongside standard digital copies.
The studio has detailed several physical collectibles for early supporters. Backers will receive a metallic phone booth card featuring Rufus (played by George Carlin in the original film). Anyone who pays a $5 deposit to reserve their pledge gets two additional metallic cards featuring Bill and Ted. Furthermore, players who back the campaign within its first 48 hours receive a fourth metallic card showing historical figures pressed against the booth glass, along with top and bottom pieces that connect all four cards into a 3D metallic phone booth display.
Landing original Hollywood leads for a retro arcade beat 'em up is a rare feat for modern retro projects. By pairing authentic voice work from Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter with an explicit stance against generative AI artwork, Art of Play Interactive is leaning heavily into handcrafted nostalgia for classic 16-bit arcade brawlers.
