BlizzCon 2026: Blizzard Unveils StarCraft Shooter and Diablo V

Blizzard laid out a sprawling roadmap that stretches into the next decade, trading RTS roots for a StarCraft shooter and planning the ultimate fall of Sanctuary.

The short version

At BlizzCon 2026, Blizzard Entertainment mapped out its lineup for the next several years, headlined by an open-world StarCraft shooter scheduled for 2030, Diablo V coming in Spring 2029, and World of Warcraft: Forever launching on November 4, 2026.

BlizzCon 2026: Blizzard Unveils StarCraft Shooter and Diablo V

Blizzard Entertainment has mapped out its release calendar through the end of the decade, announcing an open-world StarCraft shooter for 2030 and Diablo V for Spring 2029 during its BlizzCon 2026 Opening Ceremony. For a studio historically comfortable with "when it's ready," handing out release windows three to four years in advance is a rare display of chronological confidence.

The details:

  • StarCraft Shooter: An open-world shooter scheduled for 2030
  • Diablo V: Slated for Spring 2029
  • World of Warcraft: Forever: Launches November 4, 2026 (Beta starts September 17, 2026)
  • Warcraft III: Reforged DLC: "The Forsaken Kingdom" campaign is playable immediately

StarCraft pivots and Diablo's next decade

The headliner for the far future is the return of StarCraft, though players who built their identities on high-speed clicking will have to trade their hotkeys for crosshairs. The franchise is coming back in 2030 not as a real-time strategy game, but as an original open-world shooter.

Before that arrives, Diablo V will land in Spring 2029. In a narrative turn, the game takes place after a total defeat—Sanctuary has fallen, and Diablo has won. For those looking for more immediate gothic misery, Diablo IV begins its "Season of Hell’s Legacy" on September 15, 2026, bringing back the Prime Evils, Deckard Cain, and Nightmare Rifts. Blizzard also announced that the Amazon class is coming to Diablo IV in the first half of 2027, and confirmed a Diablo animated series is in development with Netflix.

Warcraft's double track and Overwatch's tenth

For MMO players, Blizzard is introducing World of Warcraft: Forever on November 4, 2026. This new Vanilla-era alternative features three new zones, over 1,000 quests, nine dungeons, two raids, and the Skyborne race. Meanwhile, Warcraft III: Reforged received a surprise version 3.0 update alongside "The Forsaken Kingdom," its first new campaign DLC in over 23 years, which is playable immediately.

Overwatch marked its tenth anniversary by detailing Season 5. The update introduces Doctrine, a vampire-inspired support hero who drains life and deploys bat-like drones. Season 5 also concludes the game's first year-long narrative arc, "The Reign of Talon," while reliable sources indicate Blizzard plans to reveal clues about Overwatch's direction for 2027 after Season 5, without specifying a 'planning panel' in February 2027.

Rounding out the announcements, Hearthstone is getting the "Reign of the Black Empire" expansion on October 20, 2026, featuring a card-merging "Assemble" mechanic, with the Monk class set to arrive in March 2027. Even the long-neglected Heroes of the Storm received a pulse check, with Warcraft's Xal'atath joining the roster on September 28, 2026.

Why it matters

By laying out plans as far as 2030, Blizzard is signaling a long-term commitment to its legacy franchises while testing whether its communities are willing to follow them into entirely new genres. Pushing StarCraft into the shooter space and expanding World of Warcraft with retro-inspired alternative servers shows a studio trying to satisfy its nostalgic base while actively hunting for new audiences.
