Scaling a skyscraper in the dead of night is already a masterclass in tension. But the newly detailed BrokenLore: ASCEND decides that free-climbing Japan’s tallest building isn't quite stressful enough, so it introduces a mythological entity to stalk players on the sheer ledges.

According to the developer's official game details, the psychological horror title centers on Ren and Yui, two famous rooftop climbers who run an online channel called SKYLIMIT. Obsessed with chasing digital fame and pushing past their limits, the duo sneaks onto the Elysium Tower—the tallest skyscraper in Japan—for a nighttime ascent meant to secure their ultimate viral video. Instead, their climb quickly devolves into a supernatural nightmare.
What makes BrokenLore: ASCEND stand out is how it fuses the physical anxiety of climbing with psychological dread. Much like the atmospheric tension seen in upcoming survival horror titles like Signal Veil, this game relies heavily on environmental isolation to keep players on edge.
As Ren and Yui ascend, they are hunted by the Rokurokubi, a supernatural entity from Japanese folklore. In the game, she appears as a masked woman with a long, serpent-like neck, lurking in the tower's shadows. But the developer notes that her presence is deeply psychological: she literally embodies the climbers' worst fears—specifically, the terror of being forgotten, becoming ordinary, and fading into irrelevance.
The details
To survive the ascent, players cannot simply run and hide. The gameplay relies on realistic free-climbing mechanics, forcing players to manually navigate narrow ledges and metal scaffolding hundreds of meters in the air.
Stealth plays a major role in survival. Because there is nowhere to run on the side of a glass monolith, players must actively cling to narrow ledges and duck into architectural shadows to break line of sight with the Rokurokubi. One wrong move or a moment of panic means falling into the abyss.
As of October 7, 2026, the official release date for BrokenLore: ASCEND is January 7, 2027, and it will be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store. Additionally, pricing details—including rumored listings for a PlayStation 5 version—remain entirely unconfirmed and unannounced.
Whether players struggle with a physical fear of heights or the modern anxiety of fading from the spotlight, the climb up Elysium Tower promises a long, dark drop for those who lose their grip.
