Step back to 2012. The air hummed with the anticipation of a different kind of combat. On October 16th of that year, Chivalry: Medieval Warfare made its debut on Steam for Windows, and suddenly, the messy, glorious chaos of medieval melee felt a little closer.

WHY IT STILL MATTERS

This wasn't about polished knights and heroic charges. Chivalry was about the grunt work: hacking, slashing, parrying, and occasionally, falling off a ladder and dying anticlimactically. It put players directly into the muck of battle, offering a first-person perspective that made every swing of a sword, every thrust of a spear, feel immediate. The combat system, with its various attack and block directions, demanded a certain rhythm, a dance of steel that was both challenging and deeply satisfying when it clicked. Maps were often sprawling affairs, filled with objectives that ranged from siege warfare to flag captures, all set against a backdrop of mud, blood, and bewildered peasants.

It arrived at a time when online multiplayer was carving out its own niche, and Chivalry carved out a space for itself by leaning into the visceral, often brutal, reality of its chosen era. It offered a raw, unvarnished take on medieval combat, and for many, it was their first real taste of truly immersive, player-driven battlefield mayhem.
