A 50% cut is a steep drop for a major 2025 strategy release.

Get it on Steam

Sid Meier’s Civilization VII is currently free to play on Steam, developer Firaxis announced, giving players a week-long pass to conquer the virtual world without the usual entry fee. The promotion, which runs until September 10 at 10 a.m. PT, drops the barrier to entry to exactly zero dollars for a game that normally demands seventy.

According to Firaxis, the free trial celebrates the franchise’s 35th anniversary, but it also serves as a showcase for a game that has spent the months since its 2025 release undergoing heavy renovation. For those who decide they want to keep playing after the timer runs out, the game is also marked down by 50 percent to $34.99.

The details

  • Free window: Sept. 3 at 10 a.m. PT to Sept. 10 at 10 a.m. PT
  • Purchase price: $34.99 (normally $70.00)
  • Platform: Steam (PC)

The studio has spent the last several months addressing early player feedback, most notably in May's "Test of Time" update. That patch reworked the game's three Ages, allowing players to stick with their starting civilization throughout an entire campaign instead of being forced to switch at each transition—a mechanic that had previously caused some friction. The update also introduced Syncretism and Affirmation systems to give players more control over national development.

Alongside the free-to-play window, Firaxis developers are heading to PAX West on September 5. Creative director Ed Beach, lead producer Tom Shaw, and game director Matt Owens will host a panel at 2 p.m. PT discussing the franchise's history and future, which will also be livestreamed.

Whether these updates are enough to warrant a permanent spot in your library is up to you, but a week of free turns is a relatively low-risk way to find out.
