A new community-made mod has finally stripped away the tedious barriers of multiplayer in Dark Souls 2, allowing players to experience the entire game in uninterrupted co-op. Pushing the update live twelve years after the action RPG's original 2014 launch proves that in Drangleic, some hollows simply refuse to die.
The mod, created by developer Yui, aims to replace the franchise's traditional, highly restrictive summoning system with a seamless cooperative experience. Yui is no stranger to re-engineering FromSoftware's multiplayer code, having previously developed highly popular uninterrupted co-op mods for both Elden Ring and the original Dark Souls.
In the standard game, multiplayer is a series of temporary visits—players summon allies for a specific boss or zone, only for those companions to be sent packing the moment the threat is cleared. This mod changes that, allowing parties to stay linked through deaths, transitions, and victories.
The details
For a game that celebrated its twelfth anniversary this year, receiving a fundamental multiplayer overhaul is less of a standard patch and more of a historic preservation effort. It seems the only thing more persistent than a Dark Souls boss is a modder with a vision.
Does uninterrupted co-op make you want to revisit older Souls games?
