Fifteen years ago, on September 6th, 2011, a group of survivors found themselves on the island of Banoi, and the vacation brochure quickly became a horror manual. Dead Island arrived, dropping players into an action role-playing survival horror scenario where the only thing more infectious than the zombie plague was the urgent need to escape.

WHY IT STILL MATTERS

This wasn't your typical zombie outbreak. The bright, sun-drenched locales of Banoi – a resort island renowned for its luxury and beauty – served as the stark backdrop for a desperate fight for survival. Players navigated through lush jungles, bustling city streets, and opulent hotel lobbies, all while being pursued by the undead. The core loop involved scavenging for resources, crafting makeshift weapons from everyday objects – a truly inspired bit of gameplay that felt both practical and chaotic – and battling hordes of infected.

What set Dead Island apart was its blend of first-person combat with RPG elements. You weren't just surviving; you were developing your character, upgrading skills, and customizing your arsenal. The island itself felt like a character, a once-idyllic setting now overrun, creating a unique atmosphere of dread lurking beneath the surface of paradise.

Dead Island's launch in 2011 offered a distinct take on the zombie genre by combining open-world exploration and RPG mechanics with a focus on melee combat and crafting.
