Escape Academy 2: Back 2 School is officially heading to PlayStation 5 on November 5, developer Coin Crew Games announced. For a series built around locking players inside tight spaces to test their logical reasoning, the main twist this time around is letting them outside into the fresh air.

"As the art director, one of my favorite parts of building the game has been making the world itself part of the experience," Michelle Huttunen, art director at Coin Crew Games, said when detailing the release date. The sequel abandons the original title's strictly linear progression in favor of a fully explorable open-world campus packed with quests, secrets, and environmental puzzles.

The original entry made its name by translating the physical escape room format into digital form, structuring its challenges into discrete, self-contained rooms. For the sequel, Coin Crew Games is expanding the scope so that exploration between puzzle hubs forms a core part of the game, complete with side quests and interactable landmarks scattered across campus grounds.

The details

  • Launch date: November 5 on PlayStation 5
  • Developer: Coin Crew Games
  • Format: Open-world campus with room-based and environmental puzzles
  • Multiplayer: Couch and online co-op available at launch across the campaign

What is changing on campus?

The central shift in Back 2 School involves how players move through the environment. Rather than selecting discrete escapes from a menu, players navigate a connected campus broken into several distinct zones, including the Headmaster's Tower and a rebuilt Humanities Campus.

That rebuild comes with a narrative explanation for returning players: the original library was burned down by Quanty during the events of the first game. The new layout replaces the original game's 2D map layout with interactive landmarks, faculty offices, classrooms, and a keyhole-shaped fountain designed to act as a visual navigational landmark across the area.

How does puzzle-solving work in the open world?

While individual escape rooms remain part of the loop, puzzles are no longer isolated strictly to contained chambers. "Puzzles aren't strictly limited to rooms anymore," Huttunen noted, pointing to hidden keyhole embellishments and environmental clues spread across distinct architectural zones—ranging from the cozy classical design of the Humanities Campus to the gritty industrial look of the Science Campus and the colorful Arts Campus.

Co-op support remains intact from day one. Coin Crew Games confirmed that both couch and online co-op will be functional across the entire open-world campus, the main storyline, and all hidden side puzzles at launch.

Why it matters

Sequels to successful puzzle games face a recurring dilemma: standardizing the original formula risks repeating previous tricks, while expanding the scope risks diluting the tight room design that defined the original. By converting the hub structure into an open-world campus, Coin Crew Games is testing whether the escape room genre can stretch beyond four walls without losing the precision that made the format work in the first place.
