Forest of Deceit: Social Deduction Game Adds Six Languages to Prevent Accidental Betrayals

Developer Ghost Camp has released a major localization update for its $9.99 social deduction party game Forest of Deceit, out now on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC. The patch introduces support for six new languages, aiming to stop players from looking suspicious purely due to a translation mistake.

Ghost Camp Team Lead Thomas Mackinnon explained that clarity is everything when you are trying to survive a cursed woodland. "The last thing you want in a game about lying is to look suspicious just because you didn’t understand what exactly was happening," Mackinnon said in an Xbox Wire announcement on September 28, 2026.

In Forest of Deceit, four to eight players are lost in a cursed, endless forest trying to build a shelter before a devastating storm hits. One or more players are Traitors infected by madness, working to secretly sabotage the group's resource-gathering efforts. Because players use their mobile web browsers as controllers while arguing face-to-face or via screen share, the entire experience relies heavily on clear communication.

How do the new language settings work?

Rather than forcing the entire lobby to play in a single language, the update introduces highly customizable localization settings. Mackinnon compared the feature to a "vegetarian option at a restaurant," making the game accessible for mixed-language friend groups.

For example, a group can host the main game screen in English, while an individual player can set only their personal mobile browser controller to Italian. This setup allows the entire group to play together natively without language barriers ruining the experience for a single participant.

Why language matters in a cursed forest

Narrated by Sylvester McCoy (Doctor Who, The Hobbit), the game's core loop depends on players defending their innocence. The developers worked closely with translators to ensure the UI prompts are highly accurate.

According to Ghost Camp, having precise translations ensures players only lose due to their own strategic mistakes or clever betrayals, rather than getting confused by a button's meaning and looking guilty by accident. Making sure there is a clear distinction between getting lost in the woods randomly and getting forcibly booted out by your friends was a priority for the design team. Every single day in the game, players must venture out to gather resources to construct their shelter, and any misunderstanding of action choices can instantly derail the team's survival odds.

With the update now live on Xbox and PC, surviving the dark woods is a lot more accessible—leaving players with no excuses when the group eventually decides to kick them out into the storm.
