"While the excitement for GTA VI and XBOX is great to see, it has also led to some misreporting," Xbox officials stated. "We are looking forward to launching GTAVI on XBOX November 19, though the game will not be streaming exclusively or to PC."
The clarification revisits speculation sparked by a Variety report, which claimed Xbox had secured exclusive game streaming rights for the title. For PC players who usually have to wait out Rockstar's multi-year console exclusivity periods, the rumor had suggested a temporary bridge.
The details
The initial rumor claimed an exclusive streaming agreement would allow PC users to play the game at launch without owning physical hardware. The logic was simple: if your rig cannot run the game natively, let Microsoft's servers do the heavy lifting. The concept also extended to mobile devices, which would have theoretically allowed players to run the massive open-world game on their phones.
However, even before the official response, the streaming path had its own hurdles. Xbox recently restructured its Game Pass service, swapping unlimited cloud streaming for a set number of hours per month. Under the new model, players must purchase additional hourly packages to continue streaming once they hit their limit. Xbox has not yet disclosed how much these additional hourly packages will cost, indicating potential costs to stream the game could be higher.
Rockstar has delayed the PC versions of its games, a practice that traditionally keeps PC players waiting months or years after the console versions arrive. The cloud streaming rumor was a possible middle ground for players who want to experience the game at launch but are unwilling to purchase a new console.
Without a cloud option, PC players have the choice: buy a console, or wait. Navigating entry points, such as prepayments for the GTA 6 Ultimate Edition, remains crucial for day-one players preparing for the potential release date. For now, PC players might just have to watch the launch from the sidelines.
