Kingdom Hearts
Disney is officially bringing the keyblade to television. The company announced that Kingdom Hearts: The Series (working title) is in development for Disney+ and Disney Channel, marking the first time the crossover franchise will receive an official animated adaptation. Landing a narrative that spans decades, clones, and dream-worlds onto a standard television grid is no small feat, but the House of Mouse is apparently ready to try.

Series creator Tetsuya Nomura and Square Enix are directly involved in discussions and development, Disney confirmed. The franchise has spent over twenty years blending Disney's classic animation with Square Enix's role-playing tropes, creating a dedicated fanbase that has spent just as long trying to explain the plot to their confused relatives.
The details
Rather than translating the events of the original 2002 game or its numerous spin-offs, the animated series will chart its own path. The production will tell an entirely original story, according to Disney. This avoids the unenviable task of summarizing twenty years of lore, which currently requires a flowchart, several wikis, and a solid grasp of what a "Nobody" is.
To keep the franchise's signature DNA intact, Nomura and Square Enix are active participants in development. This should provide some reassurance to purists who worry the show might stray too far from its roots, even if those roots are tangled in a plot that has puzzled players for two generations.
The television show might only be the starting point for Disney's cinematic plans. Walt Disney Animation Studios Chief Creative Officer Jared Bush stated he would not rule out a potential feature film adaptation in the future. While a theatrical film remains a distant prospect, the mention alone suggests Disney is looking at the intellectual property as more than a one-off streaming experiment.
Kingdom Hearts has always occupied a unique, slightly awkward space in Disney's portfolio—beloved by millions of gamers but largely absent from Disney's theme parks and linear television networks. Bringing the brand to Disney+ and Disney Channel represents a significant step in integrating the franchise into Disney’s core media footprint. By opting for an original story rather than a retread of the games, the creators have a rare blank slate to introduce the universe to a broader audience without getting bogged down in decades of digital history.
