Lazare's Sacrifice, a narrative deckbuilder set during the French Revolution, is scheduled to launch in Spring 2027, publisher Curve Games announced. The project is being developed in collaboration with Damien Monnier, who served as the lead designer for the incredibly popular Witcher spin-off, Gwent.
Because when you have successfully convinced millions of digital players to ignore a world-ending prophecy in favor of playing cards with a local tavern keep, the next logical step is to see if a deck of cards can stop a guillotine.
According to the publisher, players control a historically enhanced, notably handsome version of real historical figure Lazare Hoche as he attempts to escape Carmes Prison. True to the game's title, the core mechanic requires players to sacrifice their own cards, board slots, and health pool to make their plays stronger. Outside of the card matches—which serve as the narrative barrier to execution—players will explore the prison, engage in branching dialogue options, and pick locks to obtain new cards.
The details
Historically speaking, escaping a maximum-security revolutionary prison using nothing but a hand of cards and some light lockpicking is an ambitious plan, but it certainly beats waiting around for the 2028 window of the next Witcher game.
