Watch

Sony is turning its original console into a pile of plastic bricks. During Thursday's State of Play presentation, the company revealed the LEGO PlayStation, a 1,911-piece replica of the 1994 console scheduled to hit shelves on October 1, 2026, for $179.99 (£139.99). It is the ultimate tribute for those who want to relive their early gaming years, provided they enjoy the distinct household hazard of stepping on a sharp gray memory card in the dark.

According to Steffi Steffen, Senior Director of Licensed Merchandise at Sony Interactive Entertainment, the set is a "near 1:1 scale" replica designed to celebrate "the games, experiences, and the feelings of play we have shared as a community for over 30 years."

Rather than just sitting on a shelf looking blocky, the set builds on nostalgia with physical interactivity. Fully assembled, the brick console measures 10.5 inches (26 cm) wide and features functional mechanical details. Pressing the Power and Open buttons actually works, and there is a replica controller that plugs directly into the front ports.

The details

  • Price: $179.99 (£139.99)
  • Release date: October 1, 2026 (direct.playstation.com and LEGO Insiders); October 4, 2026 (general retail)
  • Piece count: 1,911 pieces
  • Dimensions: 10.5 inches (26 cm) wide when fully assembled
  • Featured games: Gran Turismo and Ape Escape

What is inside the box?

Beyond the console and its controller, the build hides references to the platform's early catalog. Designers worked to integrate two customizable dioramas based on iconic original PlayStation games: Gran Turismo and Ape Escape.

Players can slide the top of the console open to reveal these miniature scenes. The Gran Turismo tribute includes a miniature track complete with scaled-down racing cars. Meanwhile, the Ape Escape diorama depicts a nostalgic island scene with a monkey wearing a helmet featuring a swappable blue or red light. Both dioramas can be completely removed from the console's interior shell so they can be displayed separately.

When can you buy it?

Sony plans to launch the set directly through its online storefront starting October 1, 2026, in the US, UK, France, Germany, Austria, Belgium, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Italy, Spain, and Portugal. LEGO Insiders will also gain early access to the set through LEGO's official website and retail stores on the same day.

The general public will have to wait just a bit longer, with wide availability at LEGO.com and retail stores beginning October 4, 2026. At $179.99 (£139.99), the brick-built console costs about as much as some budget-conscious modern hardware bundles, but then again, a real console does not come with a tiny swappable plastic monkey.
