The Entertainment Software Rating Board has published new listings for Mafia II: Definitive Edition and Mafia III: Definitive Edition on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, pointing to native current-gen releases. While publisher 2K has yet to officially announce the upgrades, getting rated by a regulatory board is usually the industry equivalent of leaving the store's back door wide open.

Both titles received Mature 17+ ratings from the board, citing the franchise's usual organized crime cocktail of violence, nudity, and strong language. Currently, players looking to revisit Empire Bay or New Bordeaux on modern consoles have to rely on backward compatibility. These new listings suggest those days are numbered.
The rating leak arrives as interest in the franchise remains high following the release of Mafia: The Old Country on August 8, 2025. Publisher 2K recently released Mafia: The Omertà Collection, which bundled the Definitive Editions alongside Mafia: The Old Country Definitive Edition. While that bundle launched alongside a native current-gen update for the first Mafia: Definitive Edition, its two sequels were left behind in their last-gen forms.
The details
The two titles represent very different eras of the franchise's design. Mafia II is a tightly wound, linear period piece, whereas Mafia III leaned heavily into a sprawling, territory-capturing open world that split critics at launch but earned praise for its soundtrack. Upgrading them to native current-gen versions will hopefully bring smoother 60 frames-per-second gameplay to both, matching the treatment given to the original remake.
Despite the open-world crime setting, developer Hangar 13 has spent years steering the series clear of comparisons to other heavy hitters in the genre. "I think that genuinely at the studio, we've got our own path," Hangar 13 president Nick Baynes previously told IGN. "It genuinely never ever comes up in conversation as a touchpoint or steering our strategy or anything like that."
While the ESRB listings suggest an announcement is coming, the actual release date remains a mystery. The timing puts any potential launch in a delicate spot, particularly with Grand Theft Auto 6 slated for this November. Even though the two franchises treat their open worlds differently—with Mafia historically using its city as a narrative backdrop rather than a sandbox—they will ultimately compete for the same pool of player time and disposable income.
For now, players must wait for 2K to make the upgrades official. But with the ratings officially on the books, it seems the family business is finally getting the modern paint job it was waiting for.
