Mojang Studios is adding a new dimension called the Sift to the Minecraft universe, marking the first time the game's planar geometry has expanded in over 14 years. However, players looking to explore this new territory will have to navigate a multi-stage release schedule across different titles.

For a community that has spent over a decade perfecting survival strategies across the Overworld, the Nether, and the End, a brand-new official destination is a rare disruption of the status quo. The dimension was showcased at Minecraft LIVE following an initial reveal at Gamescom, with Xbox Wire Editor-in-Chief Joe Skrebels detailing how the new realm will function across Mojang's lineup.
Crucially, the Sift is taking a staggered path to players. It makes its debut first in the upcoming action-RPG spin-off, Minecraft Dungeons II, when that game launches on September 29, 2026. Mainline Minecraft sandbox players—across both Java and Bedrock Editions—will have to wait until 2027 to see the Sift integrated into their build-and-survive worlds.
The details
In the opening stages of Minecraft Dungeons II, the Overworld experiences strange phenomena, new enemy types, and loose souls drifting through the environment, signaling the arrival of the Sift.
Once players enter the Sift, they will encounter a distinct, colorful art style and a fresh set of rules. Environmental mechanics like shifting tides will affect characters, while newly introduced hazardous blocks will alter how players navigate the terrain. Mojang confirmed the dimension features unique companion and hostile mobs, as well as multiple biomes, including Meadows and Carapace, while keeping other zones unannounced for launch.
For mainline Minecraft players, the wait extends into 2027. Mojang showed a brief in-development look at the Sift running inside the mainline sandbox engine during the broadcast, but the studio remains quiet on how players will access it or how it might differ from the spin-off's version.
For now, the studio suggests that playing Minecraft Dungeons II is the primary way to get an early look at how the new blocks, mobs, and biomes function before they eventually port over to the core game.
Adding a new dimension to Minecraft is not a frequent occurrence. Introducing the Sift through a spin-off title first gives Mojang a testing ground for these new environmental rules before dropping them into the infinite sandbox, where millions of players will inevitably try to break them.
Are you more excited to play the Sift in the Dungeons spin-off or the mainline sandbox?
