Monster Hunter Outlanders launches globally on October 29 for iOS and Android as a free-to-play RPG. For a series where progress usually means turning giant monsters into better hats, bringing the formula to mobile screens naturally raises questions about where the real-money paywalls sit.
While the game features in-app purchases, its gacha mechanics apply strictly to preset characters rather than weapons or equipment. Following feedback from the second Closed Beta Test, the development team completely removed the gacha system for Buddies, according to an official blog announcement. Companion training caps were also lowered, with featured SSR Buddies assigned free acquisition methods in regular gameplay.
The details
Players progress primarily through a fully customizable protagonist called the Fated Adventurer, who crafts equipment and builds gear without needing real-money pulls. Extra roster characters are the only elements pulled through standard or featured recruitments.
According to details revealed during previous playtests, beginner banners grant a guaranteed SSR character after 50 recruitments at a reduced cost. Standard banners cap their SSR pity at 90 recruitments while offering a guaranteed SR every 10 pulls, and featured character banners guarantee an SSR at 120 summons. Banner items require Standard Contracts or Featured Contracts, which players can earn through quest progression or trade for using Ruta Coins acquired during normal hunts.
By keeping gear crafting tied directly to game progression, the spinoff leaves the core loot cycle intact—proving that even on mobile, some monsters still have to be fought the hard way.
