Hunters are getting a massive sky-high expansion, but they will need to climb to Hunter Rank 40 and wait until 2027 to see where the wind takes them.

The short version

Capcom has announced Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance, a massive expansion coming to PlayStation 5 in 2027. The update introduces a floating sky locale, new Elder Dragons, and a new "Boost Bracer" mechanic for all 14 weapon types.

Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance Expansion Announced for 2027

Capcom has officially revealed Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance, a massive expansion slated to arrive on PlayStation 5, Windows, and Xbox Series X|S in 2027. Announced during PlayStation's State of Play, the upcoming content moves the clock forward several years, proving that even fictional ecosystems aren't safe from the passage of time or giant, storm-controlling lizards.

The announcement, detailed by Capcom USA Community Manager Joseph Bustos, confirms that players will need to reach specific in-game achievements before accessing the new master-rank content. To even set foot in the expansion's narrative, hunters must first reach Hunter Rank 40 and complete the base game's "Awaking From a Dream" quest—a prerequisite that turns a casual weekend hunt into a full-time career path.

The details

  • Release window: 2027
  • Platform: PlayStation 5, Windows, Xbox Series X|S
  • Key requirements: Base game, Hunter Rank 40, and completion of the "Awaking From a Dream" quest
  • New mechanics: Boost Bracer equipment for all 14 weapon types

What is changing in the Forbidden Lands?

The narrative leaps forward several years after the sudden, devastating arrival of the colossal Elder Dragon Lao-Shan Lung. Powerless to stop the initial destruction, the Expedition Team spends the intervening years fortifying their position and building the Madoi Stronghold.

As time passes, the persistent mist blanketing Wyveria clears to reveal the "Skybound Eyrie"—a floating landmass high above the clouds filled with ruins, lush fields, and new ecological threats. Players will navigate this frontier alongside a grown-up Nata, who has transitioned from a young Keeper apprentice into a full-fledged hunter alongside his partner Bangard.

The skyward ecosystem features brand-new targets, starting with the Araketa, a pack-hunting Bird Wyvern that utilizes air currents from its wings for high-speed flight. Ruling over the area's storm clouds is Gundoraja, a newly discovered Elder Dragon capable of bending lightning and tempests to its command.

How does the gameplay evolve?

To combat these new aerial threats, hunters are getting a mechanical upgrade called the Boost Bracer. This new piece of Slinger equipment unlocks "Boost Action," which temporarily supercharges the unique traits and strengths of each of the game's 14 weapon classes.

According to Capcom, players can trigger the "Boost Driver" ability to force openings in combat, entering a temporary enhanced state to deal massive damage.

For players looking to practice their weapon combos early, Capcom has released a free Monster Hunter Wilds Prologue Demo on the PlayStation Store. The demo covers the opening of the story, full character and Palico customization, and access to all 14 weapons, with save data carrying over to the full game.

Why it matters

Ascendance represents Capcom's long-term roadmap for its premier hunting franchise, laying out a massive content drop years in advance. By tying the expansion to a high hunter rank requirement, Capcom is signaling that the post-game grind remains the core of the experience, setting a structured progression path long before the sky opens up in 2027.
