Moomintroll: Winter’s Warmth Launches on PS5 This Week

While most of the valley remains deep in hibernation, players won't have to wait much longer to drag themselves out of bed for a frosty new adventure.

The short version

Norway-based indie developer Hyper Games will launch Moomintroll: Winter’s Warmth on PlayStation 5 on September 18, 2026. The sequel shifts the franchise's cozy, watercolor-inspired gameplay into a snowy, post-hibernation puzzle adventure.

Watch

Norway-based developer Hyper Games will launch Moomintroll: Winter’s Warmth on PlayStation 5 on September 18, 2026, the studio announced Wednesday. Waking up early only to find the rest of the household refuses to get out of bed is a frustrating start to any day, but for a cartoon troll, it apparently triggers a full-scale rescue mission.

According to Kristina Haley, marketing and community manager at Hyper Games, this project is the studio's second game set in the Moomin universe, following their previous release, Snufkin: Melody of Moominvalley. The sequel tasks players with guiding Moomintroll through a lingering winter to wake up his sleeping family and find his missing friend, Snufkin. Moomintroll: Winter's Warmth for PlayStation 5 is priced at $29.99.

Crafting a moving storybook

To capture the visual style of original creator Tove Jansson, the developers built the game in the Unity engine using a blend of flat 2D elements and 3D terrain. The studio wanted the environment to resemble a watercolor painting, complete with the imperfect edges of tinted paper.

While the landscape relies on flat, stage-like props, the snow itself has been designed to react physically to player movements. The developers added a deformable layer of snow that responds to characters as they walk through it, allowing soft drifts to shift and clump as players explore the valley.

Tributes to the source material

The game's world includes direct references to Jansson's original art and personal history. Jansson published the first Moomin story in 1945, creating a peaceful world as a response to her experiences during World War II.

The developers have integrated historical nods into the game's environment, such as the character Too-Ticky, whom Jansson modeled after her real-life partner, Tuulikki Pietilä, during an era when same-gender partnerships were illegal. Players will also be able to spot classic characters like the Ancestor and the Hattifatteners hidden within the game's interior environments, including on a living room carpet.

Why it matters

Translating a beloved, historical literary property into a modern interactive experience is a delicate balancing act. Rather than just offering a generic cozy paint job, Hyper Games is attempting to ground this adventure in the emotional and historical weight of Jansson's original mid-century works. Whether players are there for the art history lessons or just want to kick some deformable snow, they will get their chance to find out when the game launches later this week.
