Moonlighter 2: The Endless Vault will officially exit Steam Early Access and launch digitally for Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC on September 2, developer Digital Sun announced. It is a transition that comes with a fundamental change in how players view their digital merchandise. Pushing a sequel out of the testing grounds and straight onto multiple platforms is always a major milestone, but doing so while turning the camera ninety degrees is another matter entirely.

According to Digital Sun, the sequel is ready to make the leap to its 1.0 version. The original game built its reputation on a very specific loop: crawl through top-down dungeons by night, and run a storefront by day. For the sequel, the studio has decided to shake up the foundation. It turns out that when you spend years looking down on your inventory, sometimes the only direction left to go is sideways.
The details
Changing the entire camera angle of an established indie hit is the kind of design choice that gets noticed. The original game found its audience by blending classic top-down action RPG elements with a light business simulator. In Moonlighter 2: The Endless Vault, that top-down layout is entirely gone, replaced by a sidescrolling presentation.
This perspective shift alters how players interact with the environment. Sidescrollers inherently prioritize vertical movement and precise platforming in a way top-down games do not. While the core loop of fighting monsters, gathering loot, and selling that loot to townspeople remains the central pillar, the physical act of moving through those dungeons now relies on a completely different set of mechanical rules.
While digital players can jump in on September 2, those who prefer their games on a physical shelf will have to wait a little longer. Physical distribution for Moonlighter 2: The Endless Vault will be handled by Silver Lining Interactive, with Standard and Collector's Editions scheduled to arrive on November 13.
This physical release is targeted at PlayStation 5, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2 players, leaving Xbox Series X/S players to stick with the digital storefront. Rolling out physical editions a few months after the digital 1.0 release has become a common strategy for independent releases, allowing the digital launch to build momentum before physical boxes hit retail shelves.
Sequels face a delicate balancing act: give players more of exactly what they liked the first time, or change the formula enough to justify a new number on the box. By moving to a sidescrolling layout, Digital Sun is betting that the core identity of Moonlighter lies in its concept—the division of labor between adventuring and retail—rather than the specific camera angle used to display it. For a sequel entering a crowded market, the move represents a clear decision to reinvent the mechanical flow rather than simply polish the existing model.
