Leaked gameplay footage of Xbox's canceled Perfect Dark reboot has surfaced online, offering a rare look at the project before developer The Initiative was shut down last year. The three-minute clip, reportedly sourced from a VFX artist’s portfolio, shows early weapon tests and parkour.
The footage, originally shared by website MP1st and attributed to VFX artist Tracey Landau, shows early greybox environments alongside more polished levels. In them, developers test out sci-fi weaponry, environmental destruction, and parkour mechanics. In the early stages of a game revival, next-gen fruit physics was a notable point of focus.
The Initiative was established by Microsoft in 2018 to build a new era for the classic franchise, receiving support from Crystal Dynamics during its development. While the project never saw the light of day, those involved suggest it wasn't just a collection of tech demos. "I'd done entire chapters of this universe," Joanna Dark actress Alix Wilton Regan previously stated.
According to a Bloomberg report, there was interest from Rockstar parent company Take-Two regarding financing the game, though the deal ultimately fell through.
The details
The cancellation is part of a broader consolidation at Xbox, which also saw the cancellation of Rare's Everwild and the closure of Hellblade developer Ninja Theory. For a franchise that has been dormant since the Xbox 360 launched in 2005, a portfolio leak is the closest anyone has come to playing a new Perfect Dark in two decades.
Are you disappointed this Perfect Dark reboot was canceled?
