The Pokémon Company will shut down its Nintendo 3DS storage service, Pokémon Bank, on February 26 or 27, 2027, the publisher announced. The move permanently closes the only official transfer path from 3DS-era titles to Pokémon Home on the Nintendo Switch. For players who have kept virtual collections on the older handheld system, a very long grace period is drawing to a close.

Originally launched in 2013, the storage app served as the primary bridge between console generations. While the service has been operating entirely for free since the 3DS eShop's general closure, according to the company, that open-door policy has a definitive end date.
Once the service goes offline in early 2027, the connection between the 3DS and modern platforms will be severed. Players will no longer be able to migrate any pocket monsters caught in legacy 3DS-era titles over to Pokémon Home on the Switch. It is the digital equivalent of a storage facility shutting its doors for good, leaving whatever is left inside locked behind the glass.
To soften the transition, Nintendo Switch ports of Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen are scheduled to receive Pokémon Home compatibility in October 2026, the company said.
This compatibility update gives players a new way to bring classic creatures into the modern era, but only for those specific Game Boy Advance ports. For any collections currently residing on the 3DS platform itself, the upcoming deadline represents a final call.
The details
For a franchise that has spent decades encouraging players to maintain their collections across multiple console generations, the closure of Pokémon Bank marks the end of an era. The service has functioned as the critical link preserving years of progress.
By setting a firm shutdown date, the company is drawing a clear line between legacy hardware and the modern Switch ecosystem. While the upcoming FireRed and LeafGreen integration shows a willingness to port and update classic titles, the physical 3DS library is about to become a closed ecosystem. Collectors now have a clear timeline to complete their migrations before the bridge is dismantled for good.
