Unreleased Game Freak DVD Reveals Over 100 Scrapped Pokémon Designs

Pokémon fans have uncovered an unreleased, internal Game Freak behind-the-scenes DVD documenting the development of Pokémon Diamond and Pearl, revealing more than 100 scrapped monster designs. The discovery presents data from the fourth generation, completely untouched for years.

The documentary showcases over a hundred creatures that were sketched, coded, and then quietly left behind before the games launched. This provides a view of an alternate universe where the Sinnoh Pokédex went in a completely different direction.

In particular, the footage features a scrapped evolution concept for Delibird, the ice-delivery Pokémon. Instead of remaining a single-stage pocket monster, the holiday-themed bird almost got a whole new form.

The details

  • The source: An unreleased, internal Game Freak behind-the-scenes DVD
  • The subject: The development of Pokémon Diamond and Pearl
  • The cuts: Over 100 completely scrapped Pokémon designs
  • Notable reveal: An abandoned evolution concept for Delibird

Game Freak rarely shares its internal cutting-room floor, making this unreleased DVD a rare look into the franchise's creative process. It shows how fluid the design process is for a generation of Pokémon, where dozens of concepts are tested and discarded before a final roster is locked in. For a generation as widely played as Diamond and Pearl, these lost designs offer direct insight into how the Sinnoh region's ecosystem was originally built.
