Capcom Almost Made Pragmata a Horror Game Before Pivoting Away from Resident Evil Vibe

Early dev builds leaned much heavier into survival horror—until the studio realized it shared too much DNA with another iconic Capcom franchise.
The short version
Capcom originally pitched sci-fi title Pragmata as a terrifying horror experience before steering it toward action. Lead producer Masachika Kawata confirmed the early direction was dropped so the new IP wouldn't overlap with Resident Evil.

Capcom’s sci-fi action game Pragmata was nearly a full-blown horror title before dev teams pivoted to differentiate the original IP from Resident Evil.
Speaking in an interview last month, lead producer Masachika Kawata revealed that early development heavily experimented with terrifying sci-fi themes before Capcom decided against leanings into survival horror. “At one point, there was an idea to make something a little bit more horror focused,” Kawata said. “Stepping back a little, this was going to be a new series, a new IP, and so horror, which seems to have a lot in common with Resident Evil, didn’t seem like the most compelling use of the new title.”
While Capcom chose a more welcoming direction to give the fresh IP breathing room, the finished product didn't strip away the uncanny vibes entirely. The creepy human-looking robots and eerie atmospheric moments still keep a thread of unsettling tension running under the surface—and honestly, human-looking androids shooting lasers are eerie enough on their own. The creative shift proved successful for the publisher, with Pragmata selling over 2.5 million copies worldwide.
The details
Capcom has noted that the likelihood of a Pragmata sequel remains high, leaving open the possibility that future entries could experiment with spookier elements later on.
