RimWorld Version 1.7 Ditching Unity for In-House Waylith Engine

Ludeon Studios is swapping engines under the hood of its colony sim to boost performance, promising existing mod setups won't be collateral damage.

The short version

RimWorld 1.7 moves the game from Unity to Ludeon's in-house Waylith Engine, with 2-4x better performance in the studio's tests. It's live now on Steam's unstable beta branch, keeps saves and most mods working, and Ludeon is already building a new game on the same engine.

What it means for the meta

The move to custom tech addresses engine-level simulation bottlenecks without fracturing RimWorld's massive modding community.

Full changelog →

Ludeon Studios is moving RimWorld onto its own custom engine in Version 1.7, swapping out Unity for the proprietary Waylith Engine. The update targets late-game performance slowdowns while explicitly keeping player mod setups intact.

For a colony simulator that calculates every pawn tick, thermal path, and raider pathfinding decision, engine throughput is the ultimate bottleneck. Ludeon Studios confirmed the transition is focused directly on boosting simulation performance, allowing late-game settlements to run smoother without requiring modders to rebuild their creations from scratch.

The details

  • Engine switch: Moving from Unity to proprietary Waylith Engine
  • Version: Update 1.7
  • Core target: Higher simulation performance for large colonies
  • Mod support: Designed to preserve existing player mod setups

Engine migrations often leave broken save files and fractured community mods in their wake, making a seamless transition the real holy grail for long-running colonies.
