Lichthund is partnering with Critical Role to publish and co-create Rockbeasts, its upcoming rock-and-roll management RPG, ahead of its PlayStation 5 launch in January 2027. For a small studio steering a highly specific, genre-defying project, pulling a massive tabletop brand into your corner is the development equivalent of bringing a larger sibling to a schoolyard debate.
The partnership gives Rockbeasts creative and publishing support, alongside some prominent voice talent. Critical Role cast members Matthew Mercer and Sam Riegel have officially joined the project's voice cast, bringing their vocal talents to the game's band of simulated musicians.
"This partnership is what should let Rockbeasts become the game we always wanted it to be, instead of the game we had to settle for," Lichthund creative director and co-CEO Bartosz Pieczonka said in the announcement.
The details
In Rockbeasts, players step away from the spotlight and into the thankless, paperwork-heavy role of a band manager. The gameplay involves taking a group of volatile personalities from a drafty garage to stadium-sized venues, juggling resources, handling egos, and putting out literal fires. It is a simulation of the music business where the primary antagonist is usually your own lead guitarist's temper.
Finding an audience for a management game built on vibes rather than rigid spreadsheets is notoriously difficult. By securing Critical Role's backing, Lichthund aims to bypass the traditional algorithmic struggle that indie developers face when pitching unique concepts to mainstream audiences. The game joins a busy 2027 calendar that already features highly anticipated projects like Ember Lab's next major release.
Critical Role's expansion into game publishing represents a growing trend of major creators leveraging their massive, loyal communities to elevate niche projects. For Rockbeasts, having Mercer and Riegel on board does more than add recognizable voices to the credits—it hands a highly unusual management RPG a built-in audience of millions before the first tour bus even leaves the driveway.
