RuneScape 4 Announced: Jagex Reveals Sequel, Reignited, and Animated Show

The wilderness is getting a massive modern overhaul. Jagex is taking its legendary fantasy franchise into a new era, trading classic Java-era vibes for modern engines and television screens.

The short version

Jagex has officially announced RuneScape 4 is in development using Unreal Engine, alongside a classic-style spin-off called RuneScape Reignited coming on December 2, 2026, and a new animated series.

RuneScape 4 Announced: Jagex Reveals Sequel, Reignited, and Animated Show

Jagex is officially dragging its beloved, point-and-click fantasy behemoth into the modern era. The studio announced that RuneScape 4 is officially in active development, built from the ground up on Epic's Unreal Engine to completely transform how players experience Gielinor.

It’s a massive pivot for a franchise that practically defined school-computer-lab gaming for an entire generation. According to Jagex, the highly anticipated sequel was originally conceived as an expansion to their survival spin-off, Dragonwilds. But the scope clearly ballooned into something far more ambitious, trading the old-school grid for modern, sweeping Unreal-powered vistas. Honestly? If this means the dark, spider-infested depths of Draynor Manor look genuinely terrifying now, I might never leave.

To bridge the gap between the old world and the new, Jagex is also targeting the nostalgic crowd—much like Blizzard has done with its classic server expansions, as seen with World of Warcraft's ongoing beta tests. Enter RuneScape Reignited. Jagex says this standalone experience is scheduled to launch on December 2, 2026, offering completely rebuilt progression and revamped community systems for players looking for a fresh start on familiar ground.

The details

  • RuneScape 4: Currently in development, transitioning the series to Unreal Engine.
  • RuneScape Reignited: A rebuilt progression and community experience launching on December 2, 2026.
  • Animated Series: A television adaptation in the works with Lyrical Media and content creator MoistCr1TiKaL.
  • Dragonwilds Roadmap: The survival spin-off receives the Luminance update in December 2026 and the Blood Crystal Saga in 2027.

From survival roots to the silver screen

Jagex isn’t just modernizing the game clients; they’re trying to take over your television screens too. Alongside the game announcements, the studio revealed that an animated series adaptation of RuneScape is currently in development.

The project is a collaborative effort, with Jagex partnering with Lyrical Media and massive variety creator MoistCr1TiKaL (Charlie White). While plot details are still locked tight in a bank vault, the sheer potential of seeing Gielinor's rich, surprisingly dark lore animated is enough to make any long-time fan hold their breath. Please, just give us a whole episode dedicated to the tragedy of the Barrows brothers.

What's next for Dragonwilds?

Lest we forget where RuneScape 4 actually planted its seeds, Jagex also outlined a packed roadmap for their survival game, Dragonwilds. The spin-off is slated for several major updates over the next two years.

First up is the Luminance update, which Jagex scheduled to drop in December 2026. That will be followed in 2027 by the ominously named Blood Crystal Saga—which sounds beautifully gothic and right up my alley. Jagex also confirmed that upcoming support for modding and the classic Hunter skill are officially on the horizon, ensuring the survival title remains a core pillar of the franchise's ecosystem.

Why it matters

For over two decades, RuneScape has thrived on its hyper-specific, retro charm, stubbornly outlasting flashy competitors by sticking to its community-driven roots. By moving RuneScape 4 to Unreal Engine and expanding into multimedia, Jagex is making their most aggressive play yet to shed the "browser game" label. Whether the old guard will fully embrace a polished, modern engine remains to be seen, but between a classic-minded reboot and a high-profile animated show, Jagex is casting an incredibly wide net to capture both nostalgic veterans and curious newcomers alike.
