The pixelated aliens descend once more, this time on DOS.

Step back to 1995. On this day, August 16th, a version of the arcade legend Space Invaders arrived for DOS computers worldwide. For many, this might not have been their first encounter with the relentless march of the alien fleet, but it was a significant moment for bringing that iconic challenge to a new wave of home computing.

Space Invaders, originally a groundbreaking arcade hit from 1978, tasked players with defending Earth from descending rows of aliens. As the aliens moved left and right, and then down, they fired projectiles, forcing the player to maneuver their single laser cannon, taking cover behind destructible shields. The goal: clear the screen before the invaders reached the bottom.

By 1995, the concept of shooting down waves of enemies was a staple of gaming. Yet, the sheer simplicity and addictive nature of Space Invaders had already cemented its place in history. This DOS release brought that pure, unadulterated challenge to a platform many were using for work and play, offering a dose of retro action in a rapidly evolving digital landscape. It was a familiar enemy appearing on a familiar screen, a pixelated ghost of gaming's past making a determined march into the mid-90s.
