More than double the usual pile of playable teasers has arrived on Valve's storefront, bringing heightened anxieties over discoverability and fast-turnaround generative AI clones.

Steam Next Fest 2026 kicked off today, October 19, with a record 8,202 playable PC demos, according to the event's official press page. That is more than double the volume of last year's event, turning the storefront into a massive digital buffet where finding a specific dish now requires navigating thousands of competing options.
The sudden influx has amplified long-standing developer worries around discoverability and software cluttering the catalog. Data from last June's event showed roughly 17 percent of participating demos disclosed using generative AI, a figure that industry watchers note could be higher once undisclosed implementations are factored in.
Beyond general noise, independent creators face an emerging threat: rapid game replication. Developer Alliance Arts pulled the demo for its upcoming horror title Drunken Goddess Reflux from the festival entirely. In an official statement, the studio explained it feared the demo would be "used to quickly imitate or replicate the game's presentation and gameplay with AI or other tools, and that such works could be released before our launch." Other titles, including indie project Needle in a Haystack, are already contending with a wave of hastily produced copies.
The details
For smaller studios hoping a week-long trial will build an audience, standing out in an 8,000-demo crowd was already a math problem; dodging automated copycats before launch makes it a tactical exercise.
