Street Fighter: New Live-Action Movie Trailer Embraces Over-the-Top Arcade Action

Paramount and Legendary have dropped a new trailer for the live-action Street Fighter, and it doubles down on the relationship the film is built around: the frayed friendship between Ryu and Ken. It hits theaters October 16, 2026.

The setup, per the trailer: Chun-Li (Callina Liang) pulls a reluctant Ryu (Andrew Koji) into the World Warrior Tournament by telling him his estranged training partner Ken (Noah Centineo) has already entered — and Ken, resentful and trying to escape Ryu's shadow, isn't after a reunion. It's a trap: M. Bison (David Dastmalchian) has summoned the world's best fighters to the tournament for his own nefarious ends.

Faithful to a fault

The trailer leans into arcade faithfulness instead of grounding the material — packed with direct homages: E. Honda's headbutt slam, Chun-Li's Lightning Legs, Ryu's Tatsumaki spin-kick, and the Ryu/Ken fist bump lifted from Street Fighter 3. There's even a playable version of the trailer where viewers hit quarter-circle inputs in time with Ryu's Hadouken.

Pro wrestling runs through the casting: Cody Rhodes plays Guile, Roman Reigns plays Akuma. Polygon singled out Guile as the scene-stealer — Rhodes takes a nasty slash across the face and yells at Dan about it. Jason Momoa's Blanka, Eric Andre, and Dastmalchian's Bison round out an ensemble that early write-ups describe as knowingly campy: "so bad it's good," but on purpose.

Why it matters

Video game movies have a long history of apologizing for their source material; this one doesn't. Coming out of the trailer, PC Gamer, Polygon, and Kotaku all landed in the same place — cautiously optimistic that the go-for-broke camp might actually work, a bar the genre rarely clears. It gets an immediate test: Street Fighter opens October 16, about a month after the Resident Evil movie (September 18) — two Capcom adaptations back to back.
