Solo indie developer Cat Dev Games will launch the Steam demo for The Main Menu on October 20, 2026. The psychological horror puzzle game places players in front of a terminal where messing with 2D interface options physically reshapes the locked room around them.
Cat Dev Games built the project around taking routine user interface conventions and turning them into mechanical escape puzzles. "What interested me about The Main Menu was taking something players usually don't give a second thought to, the game menu itself, and turning it into something they have to figure out and ultimately exploit," the creator said.
Players wake up chained to a chair inside a dark room with nothing but a monitor illuminated in front of them. What starts as a mundane start screen unravels into a point-and-click escape scenario. Toggling 2D buttons, adjusting settings, or digging into hidden file structures alters the physical 3D environment surrounding the character.
As players manipulate corrupted systems to figure out a path forward, a mysterious entity monitors their progress from behind the monitor and actively interferes with their attempts to break free. The developer noted that the experience takes inspiration from meta-puzzle titles like There Is No Game, but pushes the concept into a much darker, tension-filled direction centered around the constant paranoia of *"wait... can I click that?"
The details
Horror games often rely on dark hallways and jump scares, but The Main Menu taps into psychological discomfort by corrupting the one place players usually feel safe: the game options screen. By breaking the fourth wall and turning basic system settings into environmental triggers, the title transforms standard video game muscle memory into an active threat.
The Steam demo for The Main Menu is scheduled to arrive on October 20, 2026. The Main Menu will also be featured in Steam's upcoming annual horror festival, Steam Scream V, running from October 26 through November 2, 2026.
