Twenty-four years ago today, Mario traded his usual stomping grounds for a sun-drenched getaway on Isle Delfino. Super Mario Sunshine arrived, and it was less a relaxing holiday and more an unexpected adventure with a talking water cannon.

WHY IT STILL MATTERS

This wasn't your typical Mario platformer. Instead of just jumping, Mario was equipped with FLUDD, a new aquatic companion that let him spray, hover, and clean up messes. Isle Delfino was in trouble, covered in a mysterious goo, and it was up to Mario to scrub it all away. The game threw players into vibrant, open-ended levels, a departure from the more linear paths of previous Mario titles. You'd often find yourself backtracking, using FLUDD's various nozzles to uncover hidden areas and collect Shine Sprites, the game's primary collectible.

It was a bright, breezy, and sometimes bewildering experience. The humid, tropical setting felt unlike anything Mario had explored before, offering a fresh visual palette and a unique set of challenges. The story, involving a mischievous doppelganger of Mario, added a layer of quirky charm to the island's predicament.

Sunshine landed with a splash, bringing a new dimension to the beloved franchise. The emphasis on environmental interaction and the distinct island setting made it a memorable stop on Mario's journey.
