IO Interactive has delayed the Nintendo Switch 2 version of 007 First Light to March 2027, marking the third postponement for the port. While the secret agent's origin story launched on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S back in May 2026, Nintendo fans accustomed to Nintendo Switch 2 delays will have to wait a full year past the game's original release window to step into the tuxedo.
In an interview with Inven Global, technical producer Cristina Vega explained that the delay stems from a mix of team fatigue, marketing requests, and technical optimization rather than unexpected roadblocks. "The development team had been pushing hard for a long time and needed a brief breather," Vega said, adding that the studio wants players to experience the game in its most polished form.
Rather than stripping out non-playable characters to make the game fit the hardware—a shortcut Vega called a "non-starter"—the studio is focusing on technical workarounds. This includes implementing a rendering technology called "Meshlets" to optimize background assets like trees and distant objects, keeping the core gameplay and enemy counts identical to other platforms. The port is targeting a stable 30fps, after experiments with dynamic and cinematic framerates failed to work properly.
The details
Ultimately, players looking for a 60fps experience or ray tracing will still need to look to PC or other consoles. For those waiting on Nintendo's hardware, the mission remains active, just scheduled for a much later departure.
Does a delay to keep NPC density intact make sense for a Switch 2 port?
