A24 is giving FromSoftware's Lands Between the full blockbuster treatment: its Elden Ring film carries a production budget of nearly $200 million, according to a Wall Street Journal report picked up by Insider Gaming, ahead of a March 3, 2028 release in theaters and IMAX. Earlier reporting had pegged the project at just over $100 million.
The number is a different weight class for the indie studio. A24's previous budget record was roughly $70 million for Marty Supreme, and writer-director Alex Garland's own Civil War — the studio's big swing of 2024 — cost about $50 million. Elden Ring nearly triples the record in one move.
Garland's adaptation is already in the can: filming ran a tight four months from April to late July 2026 across the UK and Iceland. Kit Connor leads a cast that includes Cailee Spaeny, Ben Whishaw, Tom Burke, Havana Rose Liu, Sonoya Mizuno, Jonathan Pryce, and Nick Offerman. George R. R. Martin, who wrote the game's worldbuilding, is a producer on the film.
The details
The game this is all riding on launched in February 2022 and has sold more than 30 million copies, so the audience exists. Whether it buys tickets the way it buys runes is now a $200 million question.
