Elden Ring: Patch 1.17.1 Closes Tarnished Pack Duplication Loophole

FromSoftware moves quickly to stop players from handing out paid DLC items for free, proving that even in the Lands Between, there is no such thing as a free lunch.

The short version

A new Elden Ring hotfix has patched out a multiplayer glitch that allowed players to copy and distribute paid DLC items. While item trading remains active, giving away gear now correctly deletes it from the original owner's inventory.

TL;DR — what matters

Emergency Patch 1.17.1 fixes a co-op item-duplication exploit.

Players can still trade DLC items, but they will no longer be duplicated.

● CHANGE

Multiplayer DLC Item Duplication — Fixed an issue where DLC-specific items from the Tarnished Pack could be duplicated and shared with players who do not own the DLC.

What it means for the meta

The patch closes the loophole that let players share premium DLC items for free, returning co-op trading to its normal rules where traded items are deleted from the giver's inventory.

FromSoftware has deployed Patch 1.17.1 to stop players from bypassing paid DLC purchases through a co-op loophole, the developer announced on Tuesday, September 8, 2026. The emergency hotfix addresses a specific exploit tied to the $5 (£4) Tarnished Pack.

"This update fixes an issue in multiplayer where, under specific conditions, DLC-specific items could be obtained when not normally eligible. No additional content is included," the studio wrote in an announcement post on X.

The Tarnished Pack—which bundles two new starting classes (the Idus Knight and Heavy Knight), new armor sets, weapons, and skins for the mount Torrent—launched shortly before players discovered they could join a friend's game, drop the premium items, and keep their own inventory intact, essentially handing out free copies to players who didn't buy the add-on.

The details

  • Patch version: 1.17.1
  • Patch release date: Tuesday, September 8, 2026
  • Tarnished Pack price: $5 (£4)
  • Included classes: Idus Knight, Heavy Knight

While Patch 1.17.1 successfully closes the duplication glitch, it does not lock down multiplayer item-trading entirely. Players can still hand over DLC-exclusive gear to their co-op partners, but doing so will now correctly subtract the item from the giver's inventory.

The technical update (Patch 1.17.1) was deployed on September 8, 2026. In Eurogamer's impressions of Elden Ring, Kelsey Raynor noted that while the game's performance isn't entirely flawless, the technical achievement of getting the massive open-world RPG running on the platform remains impressive. With the duplication loophole closed, generous players looking to gear up their friends will have to decide exactly how much those friendships are worth in actual inventory slots.
