DEK: The delicate nature of digital ownership takes another hit as a cloud-powered bug hunt on Nintendo's handheld evaporates entirely.

The Nintendo Switch cloud version of Aliens: Fireteam Elite has officially shut down, rendering the 2023 co-op shooter completely unplayable on the console. It is a quiet end for a port that required a constant internet connection just to exist on the screen. Buying a cloud-only game is a bit like paying full price for a gym membership, only for the building to turn into a parking lot eighteen months later.
The sudden removal leaves Switch owners entirely unable to access the game. Because the release relied completely on remote servers, there are no offline play options to fall back on, and no refunds are being provided to players who purchased it.
The situation highlights the ongoing, built-in risk of the digital-only cloud model. When a standard digital game is delisted, players who already bought it can usually still download and play their local copy. With cloud games, however, pulling the plug means the software simply ceases to exist on the platform, leaving players with empty digital shelves.
The details
It turns out the most dangerous threat in this particular bug hunt wasn't the Xenomorphs, but the server contract.
