There is something almost supernatural about a franchise that can survive fifteen years of chaos, billions of loot drops, and still command this kind of crowd. Developer Gearbox Software announced today that the entire Borderlands series has officially crossed 100 million copies sold lifetime across all titles since the original game debuted back in 2009.
In an official blog post marking the achievement, the developer credited the milestone to its community. "'The Borderlands franchise has officially crossed 100 million units sold,' Gearbox wrote, adding that 'there aren't many franchises that have ever hit that milestone, and we certainly didn't get here on our own.'"
While Borderlands 4 experienced a softer launch than expected due in part to early PC performance issues, the title has continued to maintain momentum. Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick previously noted that the team's priority remains getting the core game into tip-top shape before addressing the scrapped Nintendo Switch 2 version. With the Year One roadmap now finished—delivering two new playable Vault Hunters and two Story Packs—Gearbox confirmed it is actively working on more Borderlands 4 content for next year alongside ongoing weekly activities.
The details
Gearbox indicated it is also looking at broader future plans for the IP, actively asking players which characters and storylines deserve further payoff. For a series that started as a cel-shaded gamble back in the Xbox 360 era, reaching nine figures in sales proves the Vault is nowhere near empty.
