Control Resonant: Remedy Details PS5 and Pro Graphics Modes

Dylan’s trip through a twisted Manhattan is packing multiple graphics modes, DualSense trigger resistance, and enough psychological baggage to fill a 35-hour campaign.

The short version

Remedy Entertainment has detailed the PlayStation 5 and PS5 Pro performance targets for Control Resonant ahead of its September 24 launch. The sequel offers up to 60fps at 2160p on the Pro, while base PS5 players can choose between a 1440p performance mode and a 2160p quality mode.

Writing on the official PlayStation Blog, Remedy Communications Director Thomas Puha explained that the studio built new technology for its proprietary Northlight engine to balance performance with their design goals. Puha noted that the sequel takes place in a twisted version of Manhattan, with a main story that takes roughly 25 to 35 hours to complete—giving players plenty of time to get lost, or at least highly disoriented, in the metropolitan supernatural.

The game's altered cityscape is divided into distinct Zones, and fast traveling between them is "near-instantaneous," according to the studio. Players will also frequently transition to "the Gap"—a liminal space inside the protagonist Dylan's mind. This mental workshop acts as a safe house where players can test builds, craft Artifacts, and unlock upgrades for Dylan and his shapeshifting weapon, the Aberrant.

The details

  • Release date: September 24
  • PS5 Base Modes: Performance (1440p at 60fps target) and Quality (2160p at 30fps target)
  • PS5 Pro Modes: Performance (2160p/60fps via PSSR), Quality (2160p/30fps with ray tracing), and Balanced (2160p/40fps with ray tracing, 120Hz display required)
  • Features: DualSense adaptive trigger support, 3D Audio, PS5 Activity tracking, post-launch Game Help

How does it utilize the hardware?

According to Remedy, Control Resonant was built with 60fps responsiveness in mind from its initial design phases. To translate that physical feel to the controller, the game designers mapped Dylan’s paranatural abilities directly to the DualSense’s adaptive triggers.

Activating abilities like Barrage, which launches projectiles, or summoning a Volatile Anomaly—a throwable, detonating turret-like ally—will offer varying levels of trigger resistance. Additionally, players using a compatible headset will have access to 3D Audio support. For those who lose their way in the mindscapes, the game will support PS5 Activity tracking at launch, with Game Help integration arriving sometime after release.

What about the resolution debate?

While providing highly specific output numbers for both the base console and its mid-generation upgrade, Remedy isn't shy about its design priorities. Puha remarked that the industry sometimes gets "a little too hung up on details like resolution," stating the studio's belief that overall art direction and visual style carry more weight than raw pixel counts.

For base PS5 players, the choice remains a classic binary of performance versus fidelity. Those moving to the PlayStation 5 Pro will get access to PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), which allows the console to squeeze ray tracing into the 30fps Quality mode and push the 60fps Performance mode up to a 2160p target.

Why it matters

For mid-generation console adopters, Control Resonant serves as an early showcase of how developers plan to split the difference between the standard PS5 and the Pro's upgraded hardware. By offering a 40fps "Balanced" mode alongside standard options, Remedy is targeting a highly specific niche of display owners, illustrating how console graphics are quietly adopting the granular customization once reserved entirely for PC players.
