Blizzard has officially confirmed that an animated series based on the Diablo franchise is in development at Netflix. The announcement, made during the BlizzCon 2026 opening keynote, marks the beginning of a broader campaign to expand the studio's portfolio beyond the desktop. For a franchise built on clicking demons in dark rooms, the next step is apparently letting someone else do the clicking while you watch.

"Diablo, I promise, is just the beginning," said Blizzard president Johanna Faries, who added that the studio is in "great discussions" regarding potential transmedia projects for Warcraft, Overwatch, and other Blizzard properties.

A larger screen

Parent company Microsoft is looking to expand its gaming intellectual properties to film and television. This follows the commercial success of the Fallout television series and A Minecraft Movie. Xbox is developing a live-action adaptation of Sea of Thieves, as reported by Entertainment Weekly.

"You won't see us try to become the biggest linear provider in the world," Xbox CEO Asha Sharma said of the company's entertainment ambitions. "But I think great games are culture, and culture is entertainment." Sharma noted that the first season of the Fallout television series was the No. 2 most-watched title on Prime Video within its first 16 days for an Amazon release. Sharma mentioned, "Call of Duty is bigger than the Marvel Cinematic Universe," contributing to what she described as "more appetite to work with us on titles than ever before."

Looking to the horizon

For Blizzard, the Netflix adaptation represents a long-term play to keep its dark fantasy universe active in the public eye. The timeline for the franchise is stretching deep into the decade; alongside the television announcement, the studio also announced Diablo 5 at the convention, committing to a 2029 release window.

While no release date, cast, or plot details have been announced for the Netflix series, the project signals how Blizzard intends to manage its intellectual property. "I promise, as soon as we can, we will share more details with you," Faries said.
