Capcom's frosty RPG update brings polished performance and stellar story beats, but massive progression overhauls might leave purists missing the tension of the original trek.
The short version
Screen Rant awarded Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen a 7.0 out of 10. While the expansion features spectacular boss fights and compelling narrative design in Norgan, its streamlined travel and rapid gear progression undermine the base game's survival mechanics.

The expansion gets one massive thing right: it crafts a snowy, lore-rich adventure with brilliant monster designs. But by smoothing out the game's rough edges, Capcom might have accidentally filed down its teeth. In its review, Screen Rant awarded the expansion a 7.0 out of 10 score, detailing a deep divide between gorgeous, atmosphere-heavy narrative steps and a sudden capitulation to quality-of-life demands.

According to the review, the new region of Norgan hosts the sequel's most compelling story chapter. However, the gameplay changes trade the series' signature attrition mechanics for rapid endgame scaling and unlimited warping. The reviewer's character level more than tripled from 45 to 142 in roughly 34 additional hours of play, trivializing the progression loop.
The details
Norgan is a fantasy fan's playground, dealing with the mystery of a second Arisen and a looming cataclysm. These questlines take place concurrently with the main story, meaning players can skip the intro and jump straight into the new content from Vernworth when starting a New Game Plus run.
For those playing on PlayStation 5, the performance is significantly improved, and the expansion finally introduces multiple save files. The atmosphere in Norgan is heavy and dangerous; the blizzard mechanics force you to seek out heat sources to keep your stamina from permanently draining. It's a wonderful taste of the environmental friction that made the base game so unique, but that tension doesn't survive the expansion's new travel systems.
By handing players the Eternal Ferrystone, the expansion removes the designed drudgery of the road. Instead of planning dangerous treks through the wilderness, the game settles into a repetitive loop of warping back to NPCs to appraise stacks of randomized relic loot, sorting through rows of equipment just to chase higher stats.
Because New Game Plus in Dragon's Dogma 2 does not scale enemies, returning to base-game regions is a cakewalk after leveling up in Norgan. The progression curve is so steep that the player quickly outpaces their recruited Pawns, requiring frequent party adjustments that make the team feel incoherent.
Ultimately, the expansion feels like a compromise. It delivers the spectacular, giant-climbing boss fights that fans love, but by clearing away the beautiful, exhausting friction of the journey, it sacrifices the very survival spirit that made the base game a cult classic.
