Preparing for the Locust invasion means clearing some serious hard drive space, as the upcoming prequel demands a triple-digit download.
The short version
The Coalition has confirmed that Gears of War: E-Day will require around 120 GB of SSD storage on both PC and Xbox Series X/S. To help manage the footprint when it launches on October 6, 2026, players can choose to install only specific modes, such as the campaign.

Setting up for Emergence Day is going to require clearing out some digital real estate first. Gears of War: E-Day will require around 120 GB of SSD storage on both PC and Xbox Series X/S, developer The Coalition confirmed, making room for the franchise's upcoming prequel. Early access begins on October 1 for Premium Edition owners before the wider release on October 6, 2026.
The game went gold on September 18, meaning the core development is wrapped, leaving only final polish and day-one tuning. Unlike previous entries, E-Day acts as a prequel, detailing humanity's first brutal contact with the Locust Horde on Sera. But before players can fight the horde, they will have to battle their own storage limits.
The details
Thankfully, players do not have to swallow the entire 120 GB pill at once. The Coalition confirmed that both PC and console players can customize their installation. If you are only looking to experience the prequel campaign in solo or co-op, you can skip downloading the Horde Siege or Versus multiplayer suites entirely. These options can be managed directly through the Windows Xbox app or native Xbox console settings, similar to how Microsoft handles other first-party titles.
For those on PC, running the game at higher settings will require some robust hardware. According to the system requirements, the recommended specifications call for a six-core processor like the AMD Ryzen 5 5600 or newer, at least 16 GB of RAM, and a graphics card with 8GB of VRAM, such as the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 Ti. On the software side, the PC version will support ray-tracing, HDR, ultrawide monitors, and upscaling tech including DLSS 4.5, AMD FSR 4, and Intel XeSS 3.0.
Xbox players will also get to test out Microsoft’s new Mythic Achievements system, a counterpart to Sony's Platinum Trophies currently being trialed by Xbox Insiders.
With modern file sizes routinely pushing triple digits, clearing out old games has become its own pre-game ritual. E-Day is just the latest title to remind players that the digital future requires a lot of physical space.
How do you plan on managing the 120 GB install for E-Day?
