Marvel's Wolverine Gets September Release Date and Mature Rating for Gore and Nudity

Marvel's Wolverine will launch on the PlayStation 5 on September 15, according to a newly published ESRB rating that details the game's mature-rated content. For a character whose primary negotiation tactic involves foot-long metal claws, a Mature rating is less of a surprise and more of an administrative formality.

The rating board's listing confirms the upcoming title will feature intense violence, gore, and strong language. According to the ESRB's content description, players can also expect sequences depicting "exposed buttocks" during gameplay. It marks a distinct shift in tone for developer Insomniac Games, which has spent the last few years focusing on the relatively family-friendly Spider-Man franchise. Trading clean web-slinging for claw-sliced combat represents a new direction for the studio's Marvel portfolio.

The details

  • Release date: September 15
  • Platform: PlayStation 5
  • ESRB Rating: Mature (M)
  • Content details: Intense violence, blood and gore, strong language, partial nudity

While the studio has not yet made a separate, formal announcement regarding the September date, the rating submission indicates the project is moving steadily through the pipeline. Warning players about violence in a Wolverine game is a bit like putting a warning label on a chainsaw; it comes with the territory, but the board has to stick the label on the box anyway.

With a late-summer launch now on the horizon, players have a few months to prepare for a version of the mutant that doesn't pull his punches—or, apparently, his pants.
