Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 will launch on October 26, 2026, officially abandoning the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One to release exclusively on current-generation hardware. It is a clean break from a decade of hardware that has clung to life like a gym membership nobody quite has the heart to cancel.
The title will continue the story of Captain Price and the rebooted Task Force 141, according to details confirmed for the upcoming release. Developed by Infinity Ward, the project represents the franchise's official shift away from the previous console generation—a transition that is confirmed to be leaving millions of players behind.
While maintaining support for older platforms kept the active player pool as wide as possible, the requirements of modern game development have finally caught up with the 2013 hardware. For a series that has spent years balancing on a generational fence, the October 2026 launch represents a definitive step forward.
The details
- Release date: October 26, 2026
- Developer: Infinity Ward
- Status: Dropping PlayStation 4 and Xbox One support
- Campaign focus: Captain Price and Task Force 141
Eleven years is an exceptionally long run for a console cycle, but eventually, even Captain Price has to pack light and move to newer ground.
