Peter Berg Says Call of Duty Movie Will Explore the Cost of War

Price, Soap and Ghost are headed to theaters, and their director wants the war to cost them something.

The short version

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare

Director Peter Berg says Paramount's Call of Duty movie will dig into the human cost of war rather than play as a straight shooter spectacle, pointing to Modern Warfare characters like Captain Price, Soap and Ghost as "complicated humans." "There's a real soul to the Modern Warfare universe," Berg told ComicBook.com while promoting The Mosquito Bowl, Bleeding Cool reports.

The film was already dated. Berg announced its June 30, 2028 release at CinemaCon in April, with Taylor Sheridan co-writing with him and producing, according to TheWrap. It's Sheridan's last major Paramount project before he moves to NBCUniversal in 2029, and the date lands in the 25th-anniversary year of the original 2003 Call of Duty. Berg also appeared to confirm the film as his next project after The Mosquito Bowl, though there's no cast or filming date yet.

The interview landed the same week the games side shipped Modern Warfare 4, so Price and company have one release out and one 20 months away.

The details

  • Release: June 30, 2028, in theaters
  • Director: Peter Berg
  • Writers: Peter Berg and Taylor Sheridan (Sheridan also produces)
  • Setting: the Modern Warfare universe
  • Cast and filming: not announced

A franchise built on 10-minute matches is getting a movie about what war costs. The date is the only part that isn't still being written.
