TL;DR — what matters
• Sombra transitions from a Damage hero to a Support hero starting in Season 5
• Her active combat hack is removed, leaving ability lock exclusive to her EMP Ultimate
• A new Cyberspace ability is introduced, which heals allies and debuffs enemy damage and healing
Sombra Role Swap — Moved from the Damage roster to the Support roster.
Hack Utility — Active combat hack removed; ability lock is now restricted to her EMP Ultimate.
Cyberspace Ability — Creates an area of effect that heals allies and weakens enemy damage/healing output.
What it means for the meta
This shift entirely changes Sombra's function, trading her high-rank assassination potential for passive team healing and tactical debuffs.
Blizzard Entertainment is moving Sombra from the Damage roster to the Support role in Overwatch Season 5 this October, with the studio confirming that Overwatch will be free to keep on Steam from October 6, 2026. This shift marks a significant evolution for a character whose stealth-and-sabotage kit has undergone multiple reworks since her 2016 debut.
Overwatch Hero Designer Scott Kennedy detailed the change during a Q&A session at BlizzCon 2026. Kennedy explained that Sombra's three core pillars as a DPS hero—stealth, ability lock, and damage—posed challenges when used at a high level. "If you move her into a Support role, she doesn’t need to do damage," Kennedy said, adding that the shift allows players to "heal your allies while still doing the things that make Sombra known."
Under the new kit, Sombra retains her passive invisibility and her translocator teleportation mechanic, with her active hacking ability now integrated into her EMP Ultimate. Sombra was frequently banned when Hero Bans were active last year, particularly in lower ranks. The new Cyberspace ability creates a healing zone that also affects the damage and healing output of any enemies caught inside.
The details
Switching from hacking to team healing presents a notable transformation for a hero once centered on digital interference. Sombra players will need to adapt their playstyle when Season 5 arrives in October.
