What it means for the meta
A substantial visual and stability upgrade for Series X|S, at the cost of starting fresh.
Metro 2033 Redux and Metro: Last Light Redux have received free native Xbox Series X|S upgrades, adding true 4K at 60 FPS and an upscaled 4K 120 FPS mode on Series X, per Pure Xbox. Moving into current-gen comes with a housekeeping catch: previous save files don't carry over, so a fresh campaign is required.
The upgrade is out now for existing digital owners — press Y on the dashboard, search "Metro Redux," and pick the Series X|S versions. Both games support the Xbox Disc to Digital program, so physical owners can claim a digital license and upgrade too. Players who upgrade through the Microsoft Store get every chapter unlocked in chapter select, each startable with a default equipment set.
The details
The visual pass is substantial: screen space global illumination, 4K textures with tessellation and displacement, improved PBR materials, and upgraded lighting, shadows, particles, and spatial audio. The fix list targets long-running pain points — instability after Quick Resume, a black screen on resume, a crash when picking up gas masks, vanishing or corrupted saves, and the notorious bug that checkpointed players with too little air filter time, trapping them in a death loop. Metro 2033's Demon and Khan freezes are fixed, as are Last Light's permanently knocked-out bear in "The Garden" and the missing stealth knockouts from "Revolution" onward.
A polished return to the tunnels — provided you don't mind leaving your old checkpoints in the dark.
