Saros Devs Break Down All Five Overlords of Carcosa Boss Fights

Three phases, five bosses and one rule: when you die, it should be obvious why.

The short version

Housemarque and Nixxes detailed how they built Saros' five Overlords of Carcosa bosses in an October 23, 2026 PlayStation Blog post. Each fight has three phases and typically lasts three to eight minutes, and all five can be replayed in the Zenith update's Overlord Rush mode.

Behind Saros' Bosses: How Nixxes and Housemarque Built the Overlords of Carcosa

Housemarque and Nixxes have broken down how they built the five Overlords of Carcosa, Saros' bosses, in a PlayStation Blog post from Nixxes game director Micah Hrehovcsik and Housemarque creative director Gregory Louden. Each boss has three phases that change how the fight looks and plays, and a typical encounter runs three to eight minutes.

"Boss fights in Saros are fully staged encounters, not just enemies with larger health bars," the pair wrote. The stated goal for every loss: players should understand why they died, know what to change and want to go again. Bullet hell, but with a debrief.

Housemarque set the creative direction, combat style, boss concepts, visual direction and VFX identity, and gave final review. Nixxes handled encounter design, animation, environments, lighting and the technical work of boss behavior and attacks, building each fight from a briefing through prototypes, playtesting and polish. Saros launched April 30 on PS5, and all five fights can be replayed in Overlord Rush, part of the free Zenith update released October 19.

The details

  • Bosses: Prophet, Architect, Shepherd, Priestess, King
  • Structure: three phases each, with arena changes, hazards, beams and projectiles
  • Length: about three to eight minutes per fight; tighter in Zenith's arcade-style mode
  • Tools tested: shield, jump, parry, dash and, for one boss, the grapple hook
  • Replay: Overlord Rush, with a leaderboard

How did the teams approach each fight?

Difficulty comes from boss behavior, arena transformation and layered attacks rather than inflated health. The fights are designed to reward deliberate movement with the shield, jumping, parrying and dashing instead of panicked reaction.

Who are the Overlords of Carcosa?

  • Prophet: an early wall that teaches the boss structure without blocking progression.
  • Architect: a flying boss fought on top of a tower that collapses mid-fight, making the grapple hook essential.
  • Shepherd: the largest boss, fought on a ship in a stormy sea, whose tentacles shrink the arena before a finale on a sloped deck.
  • Priestess: a surreal fight that opens with illusion clones and moves to a floating arena mixing combat, puzzles and platforming.
  • King: the final boss, built on skill rather than a gimmick, escalating from controlled to brutal to feral.

Five bosses, fifteen phases and, according to the people who built them, no excuses.
