Cloud Imperium Games has officially launched a Steam store page for Squadron 42, giving prospective players a wishlist button while the studio targets a Q2 2027 release window. The developer announced the store listing on October 10 alongside a trailer titled "The Oath," establishing a dedicated storefront page for a title that has been in development for over a decade.
Set in the year 2945 with the United Empire of Earth facing collapse, the standalone single-player campaign puts players in the boots of a rookie United Empire of Earth Navy pilot stationed aboard a capital ship. The studio says the game combines space flight combat with ground operations, stealth sequences, and "quieter moments" spent making choices alongside crewmates. The title runs on the developer's proprietary StarEngine.
The game's narrative features a extensive full performance-capture ensemble cast that includes Mark Hamill, Gary Oldman, Gillian Anderson, Ben Mendelsohn, Henry Cavill, Andy Serkis, John Rhys-Davies, Jonathan Bailey, Mark Strong, Alix Wilton Regan, Damson Idris, Liam Cunningham, and Jane Perry.
The current Q2 2027 target follows previous timeline adjustments across the project's extended development history, with studio head Chris Roberts noting that the window was adjusted to avoid launching directly alongside Grand Theft Auto 6. The wishlist arrival follows parent project Star Citizen crossing $1 billion in total crowdfunding in May, a benchmark that coincided with the offer of a $5000 (£3700) Anvil Odin capital ship concept pledge.
The details
For a project that has measured its timeline in years, a Steam page provides a tangible bookmark on the storefront shelf.
