Cloud Imperium Games opened Steam wishlists for its single-player space adventure Squadron 42, alongside a new trailer targeting a Q2 2027 release window. For a project that has spent more than a decade in development, putting a button on a storefront counts as a noticeable shift in trajectory.
According to details released by the studio, the standalone spinoff of Star Citizen puts players into the boots of a United Empire of Earth Navy rookie in the year 2945. The new footage highlights a mix of ground-based first-person shooting, ship dogfighting, and narrative cinematics featuring high-profile talent such as Gary Oldman, Mark Hamill, Gillian Anderson, and Henry Cavill.
The details
In a press release detailing the project setup, Cloud Imperium Games outlined a campaign centered on life aboard a naval capital ship. The studio described the gameplay as a multi-discipline loop, stating that "whether maneuvering through a space battle, stealthily moving through an enemy-held location, or making a critical decision alongside fellow crew members, players will experience the story firsthand."
The trailer frames the experience around narrative choices and performance-captured cutscenes, backed by a sprawling ensemble cast that also includes Mark Strong, Andy Serkis, and Ben Mendelsohn.
The broader Star Citizen project was first announced back in 2012 by Wing Commander creator Chris Roberts. Over the course of its prolonged production, the crowdsourced enterprise has raised more than $1 billion in funding, making it one of the most heavily backed entertainment projects in history.
While an early access version launched for backers in 2017, the primary MMO has continued to draw criticism from players over persistent technical bugs and high-tier digital ship sales that reach hundreds or thousands of dollars. Squadron 42 is positioned as the self-contained, story-driven counterpart to that open-ended universe.
A storefront listing and a defined target date give prospective players an official benchmark after years of open-ended timeline updates. For Cloud Imperium Games, bringing a standalone single-player campaign to a retail platform represents a critical milestone in turning a long-running crowdfunding effort into a finished commercial product.
Will Squadron 42 land in its Q2 2027 release window?
