The details
If you lean toward dark themes and high-stakes strategy, the festival lineup has some deliciously eerie picks. Launching in January 2027 on PC, Medium Rare is a turn-based survival horror dungeon crawler where you eat human meat and conserve ammo on a hike to save your kidnapped wife from a human meat factory. The trailer is closing in on 500,000 views, and Rock Paper Shotgun praised its "deliciously nasty vibe." Honestly, the tagline "Eat Meat. Save Wife" had me gasping mid-sentence — it's full Phasmophobia-level distress energy, and I am completely obsessed.
For post-apocalyptic survival fans, Ashfield Hollow arrives in Q1 2027 on PC. Set ten years after an outbreak in Camp Ashfield, it combines real-time combat, farming, crafting, and fishing. ScreenRant described it as "Stardew Valley meets The Last of Us," featuring a brutal 50-day single-life challenge alongside customizable modifiers if you prefer a quieter farming experience.
Tactical strategy fans should look toward Ghost Justice from Centurion Developments (the team behind Forgotten but Unbroken). Releasing Q1 2027 on PC, this turn-based cartel combat game has drawn comparisons as "Jagged XCOM." The studio has also partnered with Alienware Arena to offer players a chance to win a copy of the game, a spot in the credits, and Alpha access.
If you prefer historical absurdity, Gear Up Einstein! hits PC on November 6, 2026. This 1-3 player tactical auto-battler lets you assemble a squad featuring Vlad the Impaler, Nikola Tesla, Cleopatra, Charles Darwin, and Albert Einstein to build wild combat combos.
On the cozy and tactical deckbuilding side, Slumber Realm launches November 4, 2026 on PC. Designed by lead developer Brian Cronin (Monster Train, Inkbound, Natural Selection 2), this 90s-infused dice roguelite pits players against childhood fears like sentient broccoli. The Escapist called it "one of the best roguelite demos currently available on Steam."
For logic puzzle enthusiasts, Triomatica Games is offering I Want to Play the Villain! in Q1 2027 across PC, Nintendo Switch, Switch 2, PlayStation, Xbox, and mobile platforms. The theatre-themed logic game asks you to assign actors to roles while managing their personal fears and ambitions. Pocket Gamer dubbed it "a refreshing twist on the format."
If you want something far calmer, Gendo the Gatherer arrives November 12, 2026 on PC. Developed by UnintentionalLogic — a duo made up of an electrical engineering student and an architecture student — this cozy Edo period-inspired sim adapts the Dave the Diver loop into foraging, cooking, and serving dishes to local townsfolk.
Finally, Void Eaters arrives in February 2027 on PC with a genuinely unique premise: you build an army of mythical creatures organ by organ. The semi-idle incremental demo features 20+ locations and 20+ organs to craft, and early telemetry shows players are hooked, boasting a median demo playtime of three hours and 41 minutes (with 41% of players logging five hours or more). Constructing a beast organ by organ is delightfully cursed, and I cannot wait to lose an entire evening to it.
All eight demos are playable right now on Steam until Next Fest concludes on October 26.
Which of these Next Fest demo concepts sounds the wildests?
