Who it's for
Shift Up is developing a Nintendo Switch 2 port of its action-adventure game Stellar Blade, aiming for a stable 60 frames per second on the Nintendo Switch 2. It turns out that getting a visually demanding current-gen title to run smoothly on a portable chipset requires a little help from the algorithms.
Technical Director DongKi Lee confirmed the port's existence, noting that the studio is leaning on Nvidia's Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS) alongside frame interpolation to hit the performance target. Instead of relying purely on raw silicon power, the studio is letting AI do the heavy lifting of reconstructing pixels on the fly—a technique that is quickly shifting from a neat performance trick to an industry-standard necessity.
We have already seen other titles preparing for the hardware shift, like the recent updates seen in the Xenoblade Chronicles 2: Switch 2 Edition performance patches. For demanding modern action titles like Stellar Blade, however, the gap between home consoles and portable hardware makes AI upscaling less of an optional polish and more of a baseline requirement.
The details
The reliance on DLSS highlights the reality of next-gen hybrid gaming. While players get the convenience of portability, developers are finding that the bridge between home consoles and handhelds is increasingly paved with machine learning.
How do you feel about Switch 2 games relying heavily on AI upscaling to hit 60fps?
